A few weeks ago, I lamented the silence of the folks from Laredo's Latin American Sports Hall of Fame, the organization that stretches the boundaries of credibility in nominating famous folks to its group each year. In essence, I had not heard of anything from the group and was afraid the organization--which takes great pride in highlighting their own group--was gone.
But, don't fret. They are back in business again with the first of what I assume to be several nominees in the local paper.
This year, the organization has nominated Arturo Benavides as its latest member and with more to follow soon. Benavides is described as a "Laredo businessman and philanthropist" who as I understand played sports and gave money to sports despite the fact that "ranching is a huge part of his life's work," according to the Times.
I will be anxiously awaiting the next few nominees. Maybe an actual former Latino athlete--or two--will actually make the cut this time.
