LISD is Corpus Bound

And the Homer Simpson "Doh!" Award goes to . . . none other than rumbling, bumbling, stumbling Laredo ISD Athletic Director, Rene Ramirez, the architect behind the district's efforts to move down a classification level, from the 5A to the 4A ranks. In past years, LISD has petitioned to remain in 5A and within the confines of a Laredo district plus Eagle Pass.

Not these next two years though.

LISD has been beating the drum lately saying they want to go play schools with similar enrollment (which is less than UISD, of course). But the fly on the wall says the truth is they wanted to compete with the valley schools because it is doubtful they can perennially overcome the looming juggernaut of UISD athletics. But, the UIL had a different idea. They have spoken and LISD will be in District 31 with the Corpus area schools. The district includes:

Alice
CC Flour Bluff
Corpus Christi Miller
Corpus Christi Moody
Corpus Christi Ray
Laredo Cigarroa
Laredo Martin
Laredo Nixon

While the UISD schools kinda stay the same (Eagle Pass and Del Rio), LISD's guys and gals are going to be on yellow hounds bound for the coastal region every Tuesday and Friday. Nice tightening of the financial belts there guys. (I wonder how many teachers they'll let go to make up the budget shortfall?)

Of course Gran Poobah, Dr. Marcus Nelson, is not shy about the prospect, once telling the LMT:

“It doesn’t matter to me if we’re playing the Valley, San Antonio, Corpus or China; we just decided to go where our enrollment goes according to the UIL.”

China? Now that's bold. But, like an astute UISD coach told me today, "They [LISD] are gonna pay to get their [butts] kicked in Corpus. I guess LISD has a lot of money throw away."

I wonder what Ramirez will say to the press by tomorrow (Friday). The spin machine will be in full bloom.
